Life is the Latest Quality Entry into the Sci-Fi Genre

Life follows the crew on the International Space Station that have just made the incredible, world changing discovery of life on Mars. The crew, led by Dr. Hugh Derry (Ariyon Bakare) brings the tiny specimen aboard the space station to conduct research and examine it. After a mishap in the lab, the life form begins to evolve rapidly and violently show that it’s more than just a never before seen collection of cells.

Life was a very engrossing, entertaining sci-fi horror film in what has been a banner year so far for the horror genre following the uber successful Get Out; adding to what is becoming a new golden era for the style of film. It doesn’t throw anything new at you and harkens back to classic sci-fi horror thrillers like Alien but, it does keep you engrossed throughout. The nearly two hour runtime breezes by which is always a good thing. The ending is one of the most satisfying that I’ve had in a film in years, even though many may see it coming.

Character development isn’t at a premium here but, we’re treated to another very good performance from Jake Gyllenhall who just may be the best actor working in Hollywood at the moment. He has one emotional scene midway through the movement that puts his talent on full display, despite the material not being all that deep. Rebecca Ferguson also puts on a great performance.

All in all, Life is a good film that provides an enjoyable experience for viewers. In a time filled with formulaic blockbusters and remakes, if you pine for the days when original films got more shine, you should support this one.
