About

Mission Statement

CinemaBabel was founded with the intention of approaching film reviews from a factual and analytical basis, free from emotion, fandom, or bias. No snark, just honest analysis. As film criticism trends toward an overload of pejoratives, manipulating readers’ emotions for clicks/views, and using numbers and percentages to convey a film’s value and worth, we seek to reemphasize and elevate the written word in forming comprehensive, fully developed thought around the films we all consume. Films should be analyzed as art, not commercial product. They should not, and cannot, be reduced to number scales or percentage points. We are less concerned with a film’s box office returns and the popular sentiment surrounding it than we are with our interpretation of what it is trying to communicate to the audience, and providing insight and an honest and fair assessment of the end result. We aim to give you diverse perspectives from a diverse set of authors, moving away from a film review community where everyone looks and thinks the same way. CinemaBabel is focused on fully informing readers, provoking you to think, and fostering discussion both on this website and in your everyday lives. In short, we love film, and think that you should too.
